Lagos, Portugal: Sun Sea Seafood

Lagos (303 km South from Lisbon) is rightly regarded as one of Algarve’s finest and most popular resort towns. Lagos is situated on a stunning coastline of wide golden beaches, jagged cliffs and crystal clear waters. In the charming historic city, you will discover interesting historical monuments, fine cuisine and a lively nightlife.

Most of my days were spent in Praia da Batata beach and in one of the most beautiful beach in the Algarve, small shell-shaped Praia do Camilo. Surrounded by picturesque cliffs, golden sands and turquoise waters, I alternated beach-time with cultural visits and yummy dinners with my dear friends, with much talk and laugh in between.

Here are some interesting places I visited:

Forte Ponta da Bandeira, a small military fortress, located at the end of the promenade, was constructed in the 17th century to defend the city of Lagos from attack by enemy boats entering the bay, protecting the wealth and property of its citizens. In the Fort you can see exhibitions “Homens do Infante D. Henrique” and other cultural activities. I enjoyed the magnificent views of Lagos bay and the tiny chapel Capela of Santa Barbara.

The City Walls (16th century), opposite the fort on the waterfront, is a pleasant promenade that gave me a real feeling of history as I followed them around the town; there are landscaped gardens and paths adding to its charm. Also worth mentioning is the Governors Castle, with its facade of Arab construction.

I loved the pretty small church Igreja de Santo António (rebuilt in 1769): its walls and altar are decorated in the gilded intricately carved baroque style. Photos are forbidden.

In the Regional Museum of Lagos, adjoining Igreja de Santo António. I could admire collections of archaeological finds that date back to the pre-Roman era, as well as collections of religious art and numismatics (coins, banknotes, medals, etc.). Photos are forbidden.

Lagos Fish Market, where inhabitants get a wide selection of freshly caught seafood. Upstairs you’ll find fruit, vegetables, freshly baked bread and other local produce.

And finally, the yummy ice creams from Taquelim Gonçalves are simply the best....every day I needed my dose. I specially adored the yogurt-cherry and Malaga (Rum-Raisins).

Just in case you want to buy gifts…Lagos has nice craft shops.
